What helps the first call go well
Nothing is required, but a few details let the technician bring the right gear on the first trip: whether the house is on a slab, a crawl space or a basement; roughly when it was built; when you first noticed the problem and whether it changes with the seasons; whether water shows up after rain; and a photo or two of the crack with something for scale, a coin or a tape. If you are buying the house rather than living in it, say so and bring the inspection report if you have one.
If something is happening right now
Water actively coming in: turn off power to any outlet or appliance below the water line before you step into it, move what you can off the floor, and leave the water alone otherwise; the technician needs to see where it is entering. A wall moving or buckling: keep people out of that room and the one above it, do not try to brace it with lumber, and call. A fresh crack after a storm: photograph it with a tape measure in the frame and note the time; it tells us whether it is still moving.
After you call
