About this site

A booking desk for foundation work, run from Huntsville, with the crew's phone on the other end

Rocket City Foundation Repair is the number people in Madison County call when a crack has grown or a floor has started to lean. We take the call at any hour, ask the right questions, and send out an independent foundation contractor who measures before anyone talks about money.

This is a locally run referral and booking service, not a franchise and not a call center three states away. When you phone or send the form, your details go straight to a foundation crew that works Huntsville, Madison, Harvest, Hazel Green, Meridianville, Owens Cross Roads, Decatur and Athens. They own the job from the first inspection to the last shovel of backfill; we keep the phone answered, the schedule honest and the paperwork straight.

The reason a desk like this exists is simple. Foundation repair is the one home trade where the wrong first visit costs the most. A salesman who quotes piers from the driveway will sell piers. A technician who sets up a laser level in the hallway, gauges every crack and walks the yard after a rain will sometimes tell you to extend a downspout and come back in a year. We only send the second kind.

What a free inspection looks like

Count on about an hour. The technician starts outside: grading, gutters, downspout outlets, the brick veneer at every corner, where the soil meets the slab or the block. Then the basement or crawl space, with a flashlight on the walls, the piers, the sill and the beams. Then every room, with a rotating laser on a tripod and a receiver on a rod, reading floor elevations to a tenth of an inch. Cracks get photographed with a scale and, where it helps, a crack gauge is left in place so the next visit can say whether anything moved.

You get the findings in writing before the truck leaves: what is moving, what is merely old, what is water and what is soil, and a line-by-line price for any work that is worth doing. Plenty of visits end with no repair at all, and that is a fine outcome.

Why houses in Madison County move

Because of the ground. The soils the county is built on, Decatur silty clay loam, Dewey silt loam and Colbert silty clay, take on water in a wet April and give it up in a dry August, and they change volume while they do it. A slab edge that dries out faster than the middle drops a little; a crawl-space pier on clay that stays wet all winter heaves a little. The east side of Huntsville, along the foot of Monte Sano and the ridges, sits over a perched water table that pushes on basement walls after every long rain. The southeast corner of the county near the Flint River adds karst and bottomland soils to the mix. None of this is unusual, and none of it means a house is failing. It does mean someone has to measure.

The rules we work inside

Three of them, and we will say them plainly. Alabama requires a residential home builder's licence from the Home Builders Licensure Board for any home repair of $10,000 or more, which covers most pier jobs; ask the crew for their current number and look it up before you sign. Structural work inside Huntsville city limits, meaning underpinning, pier replacement, lifting a load-bearing slab or anchoring a wall, is permitted through City of Huntsville Building Services, and the crew files it. Any excavation is called in to Alabama 811 two business days ahead. Outside the city, the town or county building office takes the permit, and we know which one.

What we are not

Not structural engineers. When a lender, a buyer or an insurer needs a stamped letter, we will tell you so and refer an engineer rather than pretend. Not mold remediators, termite inspectors, roofers or plumbers, though all four show up in foundation stories and we will point you to the right trade. Not a company that quotes a price before measuring.
